Missions and Outreach

MISSIONS AND OUTREACH COMMITTEE
This Committee supports selected local (Outreach) and worldwide (Missions) charities which function for the primary purpose of spreading the Gospel of our Lord.  We do this with our financial support, the source of which is an allocation from the Prince of Peace annual budget.  In selecting charities, we give special consideration to Committee members and other parishioners who have an interest in a particular charity.  Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month for discussion and decisions on the allocation of funds to charities, to hear presentations from representatives of charities we support, and from those seeking funding.  Also discussed are plans for future mission trips and other matters which present themselves from time to time.  Membership is open to all parishioners of Prince of Peace who have a heart for this ministry.

Sonrise Orphanage
Born of the Mustard Seed Project in 1998, the mission of Bishop John K. Rucyahana's Sonrise Orphans' ministry is to provide aid to the children of the Shyira Diocese in Rwanda, Central Africa. Thousands of children became orphans as a result of the genocidal massacre which devastated Rwanda over a 100-day period in 1994. An estimated 800,000 people were killed. "Something must be done for these children or we will lose an entire generation," Bishop John said. While the world's focus has moved on, the aftermath of the genocide remains. Initially a project of the Anglican Church, the Sonrise Orphans' School is ecumenical in scope, receiving support from all Christian traditions. On September 24, 2001, the Bishop's vision of a school capable of accommodating 450 resident and day students came to life.

The Cutting Edge
Our vision is to bring the Good News of the Christian faith along with quality medical care to people across sub-Saharan Africa without limitation regarding tribe, status, or religion.  We will build hospital and recruit personnel to service doctors, nurses, technicians, and administrative staff in these facilities.  To ensure continuity, we will give emphasis to the training of nationals to be competent medical and administrative professionals.  We will be involved in primary and community health care, maternal and infant care, as well as curative care.  Additionally, we plan to assist the welfare of nationals though the establishment of training programs of various types of agricultural and other non-medical projects.
